A Not So Certain Journey

Who is Jesus?

May 20, 2006 · 1 Comment

As I am preparing my sermon for tomorrow I was re-reading part of Searching for God Knows What and I came a across some words that I had underlined when I read the book the first time. Miller is talking about the Jesus the way that we see him….

At the same time, however, we are at a disadvantaged because the Jesus that exists in our minds is hardly the real Jesus. The Jesus on CNN the Jesus in our books and in our movies, the Jesus of the suburbs, a Jesus who wants you to be a better yuppie, a jesus who is extremely political and supports a specific party, a Jesus who has declared a kind of culture war in the name of our children, a Jesus who worked through the founding fathers to being America, a Jesus who dresses very well, speaks perfect English, has three points that fulfill any number of promises and wants you  and me to be, above all comfortable. Is this the real Jesus?

I was really intrigued by these words. I agree with what Miller is saying here. Maybe not a couple of years ago, but now I feel that my World view has changed. Especially my perspective on church.

Invisible Childern

I wanted to take a minute to tell you about an organization called . “Invisible Children is dedicated to providing financial resources to invisible children by documenting their true, untold stories in a creative and relevant way, resulting in positive change.” Now you might be thinking, oh man not another cause for
Africa. Well your right, yes another worth while organization that is doing their part to help fight just one of many needs that exist in
Africa. I spent two months in Africa last summer, so I know first hand there are countless opportunities to help in
Africa.

Invisible Children provides much more than food or health care for children in
North Uganda. They help provide education for children as well as documenting their story.

Their "Bracelet Campaign" is a micro-economic program intended to create jobs, in an otherwise unemployable war area, and allowing Ugandans to generate a much-needed income. I encourage you to check out there website and educate yourself on what the are trying to accomplish.
